Molasses in January: (not knowing when to put animal names in caps)
We've all (unless your mind contains some total disregard for any enjoyment in life or doesn't recognize cute in its purest most slightly above body temperature form)seen and enjoyed a picture of two different species hanging out together in relative harmony. The baby Hippo napping with the Tortoise, the Chimp petting the Kittie. In an attempt to over analyze even the most mundane I couldn't help but begin to consider recently while looking at just such a photo. Are there racist and or speciest (it's not a word, relax) members of the animal kingdom? Is there an ignorant Hippo, and perhaps ignorant might not be the word since I'm pretty sure the Hippo's typical thoughts include eating, sleeping, swimming, humping or being humped and killing the occasional villager who gets to close to the creek during the dry season. So there's a lot to be ignorant about as a Hippo, and perhaps I've answered the question. But I press on. Is there the "ignorant" Hippo who sees its brother sharing a piece of shade with the massive turtle and is disgusted? This regressive Hippo would rather see its kind portrayed as pink marble eating freaks then have to look at his brother in mixed company? I use the Hippo as an example but this could be any animal. Does the enclosed Penguin at the zoo, look out from its glass cage and some how think its any better than the mixed race human couple who've come to enjoy that same Penguin's captivity? Like that frozen hearted marine bird wouldn't be trying to make it with a Puffin if it was free to do so. Close minded animals, close minded people. My tears of joy that were once generated by these sweet and poignant photographs have now turned to tears of sorrow for a world divided by hate and judgement.
