Worlds Collide

On the off chance you thought sweaty dudes don't rule the world, I just saw a CPR sign in a restaurant that featured two girls in the demonstration picture for mouth to mouth.

What follows is taken directly from the bio of a band called Damnation a.d. They were a band I was pretty into some 8 years ago. As is all the rage right now they have decided to reunite (sort of), and to unfortunately do so on the worst cookie cutter, fast food label, barfing out mall punk records today, Victory Records. Let's look at the selected portion of the bio (written in interview fashion with the lead guitar player Ken Olden) and then discuss.

“Time was flying by,” Olden recalls. “Mike, who was doing project called When Tigers Fight, called and basically said, ‘Nobody knows me and my voice better than you; can you record my vocals? He came down here and I was really impressed; his voice was better than ever. Plus, we recorded him on ProTools, which being a studio owner, I had been using for years. I suddenly realized that I had never recorded Damnation on anything other than analog, which has some positive characteristics, but can significantly slow down the pace of the recording process.“Now, using ProTools, Mike and I were knocking songs out so quickly, I thought, ‘We could really do a great album, and take Damnation A.D. to a new level.’ I started demo-ing new songs, and I was pretty surprised that I came up with a ton of stuff. I wanted to make sure the newer material held up to the older and tested standards, so I asked others if the new stuff held up. I felt the music had to be better than ever, or it wasn’t going to be worth coming back.”

Let me be very clear here. Saying a recording is better because it was done with ProTools is like saying, your Thanksgiving Turkey tastes better because you cooked it in your microwave. Yes it was quicker, yes it enabled a person who isn't normally skilled enough to cook a turkey the ability to do so, but yeah, the turkey tasted awful. No recording has ever been improved by a computer program. It's for chumps and Knickleback. Rock needs to have edges where you might get a splinter when you run your hand across it, ProTools is the ultimate sand paper. It's why KnickleBack makes anyone with taste want to jam Lawn Darts into their ears. I'm no audio engineer, and ProTools may serve some positive purpose, but I'm not sure it's enough of one to warrant its existence.

And as far as Damnation a.d. I know the singer Mike is going to deliver sick vocals although they will be toned down by this type of recording, and Ken Olden, the Ahmad Rashad/Bryant Gumbel of electric guitar has no hope of delivering. Because it's clear that Hillel Holloway has been erased from the bands history, and he was the hesher backbone, the technician, the metal up your ass of Damnation a.d. He probably had to go on account of not wanting to wear wind pants on stage.
